Tazy history: tradition and recognition

The historical summary in the FCI standard connects the Tazy with nomadic life in Central Asia, particularly Kazakhstan. The dog helped people hunt, working alone, in groups or alongside a bird of prey. In Kazakh tradition, the Tazy belongs to the Jeti Qazyna, the seven treasures. The standard describes its importance as a loyal human companion.

On 11 December 2015, the National Bank of Kazakhstan issued a silver Tazy coin with a face value of 500 tenge in the Respublika Igiligi series. Its reverse depicts three gilded Tazy figures against a mountain backdrop, the inscription «ТАЗЫ» and the year of issue. The rectangular coin measures 45 × 30 mm and is made of 925-fineness silver.

At an exhibition in Astana organised by the Union of Cynologists of Kazakhstan, an international commission examined about a hundred Tazy of different ages and colours. The Ministry of Ecology and Natural Resources reported that the commission’s findings were to support the FCI General Committee’s consideration of the breed.

On 3 September 2024, the FCI provisionally recognised the Kazakh Tazy, listing Kazakhstan as its country of origin. The breed received number 372 and was placed in the sighthound group. As checked on 19 September 2026, its FCI entry still records provisional status. This is a stage of international recognition, distinct from definitive recognition.
