Exercise that suits the dog and the weather

Match the length and pace of walks to your dog's age, health and fitness. Increase exercise gradually, allowing time to sniff, play and rest. If a familiar walk becomes difficult, discuss the change with your vet.

In hot weather, choose cooler times, reduce exercise, carry water and stop in the shade. Avoid hot ground surfaces, which can burn paws.

A quiet place to rest

Give your dog a dry, comfortable, draught-free place where it can rest undisturbed. It also needs somewhere to retreat from noise or company. If you have several dogs, provide separate beds so that each can rest alone.

Learning through rewards

Reward desired behaviour with food, play or attention. AVSAB recommends reward-based training and opposes methods that cause pain or fear, including electronic collars, prong collars and leash corrections.

Getting used to coat care

Choose a brush and grooming frequency to suit the coat's length and condition. Introduce handling and grooming tools gradually, using rewards. Do not pull at tangled hair; ask a groomer how to manage it. Consult a vet about irritated or painful skin.

Food and water

Choose a complete food suitable for your dog's age and health. Measure portions using the manufacturer's guidance, then adjust for weight and activity; treats count towards the daily food allowance.

Keep fresh drinking water available at all times. A noticeable change in appetite or water intake is a reason to contact your vet.
