Research note
What two 2023 studies say about Tazy genetics
Two research papers describe breed diversity and genomic regions; neither can assess an individual dog from its DNA.
A sample from three regions of Kazakhstan
The PLOS ONE study examined 114 Tazy from southern, northern and eastern Kazakhstan. The authors found high genetic diversity.
For detailed DNA analysis, they selected 39 of these dogs with high expert scores. This sample does not represent all Tazy.
A candidate gene is not an individual forecast
The Scientific Reports study examined runs of homozygosity: stretches where DNA variants match on both copies of a chromosome. About 67% of identified runs were 1–2 million base pairs long.
Among 12 candidate genes, the authors highlighted CAB39L, which might affect Tazy speed and endurance. This is a research hypothesis; it cannot establish an individual dog's running ability.
